Flying Dog Garage Named One of 12 Best Small Businesses in Michigan

We are excited to announce that Flying Dog Garage is one of only 12 Michigan companies selected from over 12,000 eligible businesses to receive the 2008 Best Small Business Award, conferred by the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC).

award

The MI-SBTDC is a big part of the reason that our vision to open Flying Dog Garage is a reality today. Our counselor (and friend), John Schmitt, deserves a lot of the credit.

We can’t thank John, Jax Gardner, and everyone at the MI-SBTDC enough or recommend their services more highly. They provide counseling, training, and advocacy for Michigan's new business ventures, help for existing and expanding businesses, and support for new technology companies, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Headquartered at the Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, the MI-SBTDC has twelve regional offices and selects an outstanding small business in each region from those they worked with the previous year, a total of 12,382 companies statewide in 2008. Flying Dog Garage is this year’s Best Small Business for Region 11 (Kalamazoo).

Flying Dog Garage and the other 11 honorees were chosen for their success in terms of sales, business strategy, economic impact, and the involvement of the MI-SBTDC in providing assistance to reach their goals.

Flying Dog Garage Supports Wish-A-Mile 300 Bicycle Tour

Flying Dog Garage is proud to support our good friend Dan Cole on the Wish-A-Mile 300 Bicycle Tour for the Michigan Make-A-Wish Foundation. The ride will take place July 24-27, 2008.

Dan and over 700 riders will make the three-day ride of over 300 miles, riding their bikes from Traverse City to Milford, Michigan, to raise money for the foundation to help make the wishes of terminally ill children come true. This is Dan's fourth year doing the 300, and this year he hopes to raise $8000 in pledges, enough to pay for one child’s wish. To demonstrate his commitment, Dan will ride the 300 miles on a single-speed bike. He's calling it "One Gear for One Wish." We are proud of Dan for his efforts on behalf of this great cause and encourage all of you to join us in making a tax-deductible pledge in support of his ride. Visit Dan's webpage to learn more or make a pledge.

Fourth-graders visit Flying Dog Garage to learn about the metric system

Nancy Klee’s fourth-grade class from Woods Lake Elementary visited the Garage on April 17 to learn about the many ways that the metric system is used in automotive engineering.

Ms. Klee emphasizes hands-on experiences for her students in teaching them about math, science, and technology, and the kids learned a lot and had a good time. They wrote enthusiastic letters and poems in response to their visit and collaborated on a spectacular poster, pictured above, illustrating metric tools.

The poster now occupies a place of honor in the Garage's lobby. Check it out next time you're in for a repair or maintenance. Thanks, Ms. Klee and Woods Lake fourth-graders!
